Headlines


 

Headlines present a powerful opportunity to grab your audience’s attention and motivate readers to spend more time with your marketing communication piece. Of course, more time spent leads to all kinds of benefits — increased awareness, stronger affinity, a response to your call to action. But even if the headline is the only element that a reader takes away, there is a lot you can convey and achieve with just a handful of words.

A “Why” headline will help you make the most of those words. Remember, while everyone else talks about “What” they do, your marketing communication piece will stand out by sharing “Why.” This is where the conversation should begin. For that reason, the Why-How-What communication strategy recommends headlines that express our campus-wide shared value — Do something bigger altogether.

As part of the ongoing Integrated Marketing & Strategic Communication (IMSC) unit strategy sessions, University Relations crafts customized headlines based on each unit’s messaging grid. With the goal of demonstrating how to execute “Why”/DSBA messaging, the headlines and grid are among several tools developed and shared as part of the IMSC sessions.

In addition to the unit headlines, a repository has been developed to support university level “Why” messaging and how we collectively define what it means to Do something bigger altogether at UNCG. These headlines can be used in conjunction with a unit’s customized set or simply as thought-starters for creative brainstorming.

The repository is categorized into four topical areas: Challenge, Support, Engage and Specific Audiences.

CHALLENGE.

The headlines under this category reflect how UNCG challenges each of us to succeed and to celebrate our unique achievements. Being challenged takes us out of our comfort zones, instills confidence and fosters growth. Headlines under this category also support the university’s goal of raising awareness of UNCG’s outstanding academics.
