From a fully lit theatre to a view of the stage from three sides, the American Shakespeare Center will give patrons the full Shakespearean experience when it performs “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” Monday, Jan. 23, in UNCG’s Aycock Auditorium.

The 8 p.m. performance is the fifth in the 2011-12 Performing Arts Series, sponsored by the UNCG School of Music, Theatre and Dance.  Tickets are $25-35 and may be purchased online at boxoffice.uncg.edu, by calling (336) 334-4849 or at campus box office locations.

Dedicated to presenting William Shakespere’s works to contemporary audiences, the company also works to replicate the experience of Renaissance theatre goers. Actors often tackle multiple roles during a single production and forgo the elaborate sets and effects possible in modern theatre in favor of simple sets that put the focus on the performers, the audience and the imagination.

One of Shakespere’s most well known plays, the comedy “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”  tells the inter-woven stories of the impending marriage of Theseus & Hippolyta, four Athenian lovers (Hermia, Lysander, Helena and Demetrius), a group of rough neck amateur actors, and the mischievous faeries who set into motion the comedy of errors.
