Dr. Jacquelyn White, professor of psychology and associate dean for research in the College of Arts & Sciences, attended a reception at the home of Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, to mark the 17th anniversary of the Violence Against Women Act. The Bidens spoke to the researchers, activists, police officers, journalists, teens and parents in attendance about preventing teen dating violence and sexual assault.

White has conducted research on gender issues, aggression and intimate partner violence for more than 30 years, publishing numerous articles and book chapters. That research includes one of the few longitudinal studies of sexual and physical dating violence among adolescents and college students, a five-year project funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Institute of Justice. She also recently completed a longitudinal study on the relation between trauma and substance abuse.

Co-chair of the National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence Across the Lifespan (NPEIV), she made four presentations at the partnership’s recent conference in San Diego. She reported on several sets of findings regarding physical and sexual assault in dating relationships, and the role of alcohol in rape.
