Entrepreneurship Cross-Disciplinary Program earns national honor
The U.S. Association for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (USASBE) has named the Entrepreneurship Cross-Disciplinary Program the Outstanding Emerging Entrepreneurship Program in the U.S.
UNCG’s program, housed in the Bryan School of Business and Economics, won out over such highly competitive finalists as the University of Miami/Blackstone Program and the University of Maryland. Winners were announced Jan. 14 in New Orleans.
Dr. Dianne H.B. Welsh, Hayes Distinguished Professor of Entrepreneurship, built the program and serves as program director. Welsh came to UNCG in Fall 2008. She founded and served as inaugural director of the North Carolina Entrepreneurship Center from 2009-11.
Currently, the entrepreneurship program offers 40 courses in 20 departments across campus. In the fall semester, 613 students from across campus took entrepreneurship classes. This year, the second year of the entrepreneurship major, 139 students have declared a major in entrepreneurship.
Welsh designed the entrepreneurship program, redesigned the minor in entrepreneurship for business students, designed a new entrepreneurship minor for non-business students, and designed a new graduate certificate in entrepreneurship. The minor, in its third year, has 143 students; 73 different majors across campus are taking entrepreneurship classes.
Welsh co-created the Entrepreneurship and Sustainability Living Learning Community with Dr. Larry Taube and founded and directed the Entrepreneurship Cross-Disciplinary Program in Fall 2011 to manage and grow the academic program across campus. To offer hands-on experience to students, Welsh has also created the student-run Spartan Trader retail consignment store, which opens on campus in February.
USASBE is the largest independent, professional, academic organization in the world dedicated to advancing the discipline of entrepreneurship, with over 1,000 members from universities and colleges, for-profit businesses, nonprofit organizations and the public sector.
