The School of Nursing has again been named a Center of Excellence by the National League of Nursing (NLN). UNCG’s School of Nursing is one of only two nursing schools in the nation to earn the honor for three consecutive terms.

The school is one of eight schools of nursing, representing programs across the academic spectrum, designated as NLN Centers of Excellence. Schools were recognized Sept. 23 at the NLN’s annual Education Summit in Orlando, Fla.

Schools may earn COE status in one of three categories: Enhancing Student Learning and Professional Development; Promoting the Pedagogical Expertise of Faculty; or Enhancing the Science of Nursing Education. UNCG’s School of Nursing was chosen for Promoting the Pedagogical Expertise of Faculty.

Earning this third consecutive Center of Excellence honor entitles the nursing school to carry the COE designation for an additional two years, from 2011 to 2016, instead of the standard three-year term. Only one other school, at Excelsior College in Albany, NY, shares that distinction.

Each year since 2004, the NLN has invited nursing schools to apply for Center of Excellence status, based on their ability to demonstrate sustained excellence in faculty development, nursing education research, or student learning and professional development. Schools must also have a proven commitment to continuous quality improvement.

Schools that carry the Center of Excellence designation serve as advisers and sounding boards to other nursing programs that seek to gain Center of Excellence distinction.

“The COE banner carries with it a responsibility to the entire academic community,” noted Cathleen Shultz, PhD, RN, CNE, FAAN, president of the NLN. “We expect that COE schools will help educate and inspire others, thus elevating the standards of excellence throughout all levels of higher education in nursing.”
